The nonbinary pride flag

Nic Shoults

Firstly, Happy International Non-Binary People’s Day! I am pleased to be writing a blog to celebrate non-binary people across the globe. Whilst we aren’t legally recognised across the world we are still here, and we should be proud to stand up and be counted

What a year it has been for me. On Non-Binary People’s Day 2022 I was sitting in a solicitor’s office getting my deed poll signed to legally change my name to Nic, a name I have used for many years and fits my gender identity. Since then, I have watched Tottenham struggle under Conte, begin a new era and excitement of Ange and have had my own year of change and growth.

This year, I took part in my first full season playing football in the London Unity League, an LGBT+ inclusive league. This was a big step for me as growing up I couldn’t be part of the football world as I didn’t fit into the men’s or women’s teams. Finding teams that play inclusive football has been life changing. Over the course of the season, we won some games and lost some. Overall, it was great to be welcomed to play and be accepted in football as a non-binary person. I also had the privilege to represent Proud Lilywhites in a Rainbow Laces inspired 5-a-side tournament.

I attended the new Tottenham stadium for the first time. Meeting up with members of the Proud Lilywhites. I am pleased to have joined the Proud Lilywhites committee this year. I have taken part in my first committee meeting and have the honour to be able to write this blog to highlight non-binary people.

I am also proud to have attended my first ever Trans+ Pride March in London. What an overwhelming day. The love and support for the trans community left me on such a high! This year also saw record numbers of people turn out for Pride in London. I was fortunate to be marching in the parade with my football team, proudly showing that football can be inclusive and welcoming.

Every year there is change in the air and every year non-binary people are more visible. I look forward to what the next year brings for me, and for non -binary people everywhere.

COYS!
